Adobe MAX Twitter Tips

Using Twitter can help you get the most out of your AdobeMAX experience, whether you're here in Los Angeles with us, or following the event online. To help new Twitter users, this page will layout some good tips for efficiency and general use, as well as some links to other good articles. There are also more great tips and information available on the Adobe MAX Social Media Resources page.

How to Create a Twitter Account:
All you need is an email address. Then go to Twitter.com and follow the instructions. If you need more info, check out this post by eHow. Basically, once you sign up you can post messages out to the Twittersphere.

Who to Follow:
But it's also important to populate your feed by following others. Nothing will be coming into your account until you select other users who you would like to "follow". When you follow another user, anything they tweet gets fed into your stream. Check out this post for a list of accounts that will be posting about Adobe MAX. But here are a few important ones:
  • @AdobeMAX - is the main account for conference announcements, news breaks, and logistics updates, as well as a few surprises.
  • @Adobe - will be spearheading community engagement and highlighting interesting conversations happening at or about Adobe MAX.
  • @AdobePR - will not be dedicated solely to MAX, but will be posting relevant items for important MAX announcements

Using Twitter Tags:
Twitter tags, or hash tags are important to getting the most out of your Twitter experience, especially if you're tweeting about, or following tweets from an event with many different topics, themes, or activities (like AdobeMAX!). Twitter tags are basically keywords with a "#" infront of them. They cannot contain spaces or punctuation. Here's a great article by Mashable.com about using Twitter tags, but here are the basics:
  • Click for a list of important Twitter tags for MAX - this list will be updated throughout the conference
  • You can use multiple tags together, so a tweet that ends with "#AdobeMAX #flash" can be understood to be related to both Flash as well as the MAX conference
  • You can search on a tag using search.twitter.com, and leaving that tab open in the browser will feed results in real time - check out the search for #AdobeMAX
  • Tags are not case-sensitive, so #Flash and #flash are the same
Following the Conversation:
Now that you know how to use Twitter tags, consider opening several browser tabs with each tracking a Twitter search (search.twitter.com) for different tags (or combinations of tags). This will allow you to see as new messages come in around those tags and the topics they represent. You'll see numbers appear in the browser tabs indicating how many new messages have been posted for that search since the last time you checked that tab, and you can refresh to see all those new posts. Check this one out for #AdobeMAX.

You can also search for users rather than hash tags. If you do a Twitter search for @Adobe, then you will be tracking any time someone tweets to or about that account, so you can follow important Adobe accounts and evangelists in this same way.

Check out our post about Twitter Accounts to follow at Adobe MAX - following these tweeters will help you follow and join in on the community conversation: Twitter Account to Follow at Adobe MAX

Open == Community

Open is driven by community. Community enables open. These are absolutes in any discussion of openness, be it standards or open source.

During MAX this year Peter Elst will be presenting on the Adobe communities around openness.

I've had a chance to see his draft presentation. And I learned things I didn't know, understand the reach and range of our communities better, and honestly, can't wait for a chance to hear what he's going to add during the talk.

So, make sure to attend Peter's session. and, from the description "Walk away with all the information you need to get involved and share your knowledge, network with fellows and make your life easier. "

Because, Community Matters.

Flash Collaboration Service : Gearing Up for MAX

Want to do real-time presence, P2P audio/video, file sharing, and multi-user collaboration, from the comfort of your Flash and Flex apps, with no need to do your own hosting for it? You might want to check this out :

That special MAX feeling is in the air, and the Adobe Flash Collaboration Service (AFCS) team is getting ready to jump into the monkey cage yet again. We're working like crazy on a few different fronts:

  • getting some announcements ready (cough$)
  • working with some customers to have them show off what they've built
  • planning a variety of MAX sessions to help devs learn more about AFCS.
Here's a breakdown of sessions we're doing - in order from easiest to more hardcore :
  1. Developing Social Flex Apps with the Flash Collaboration Service - a Primer - I’m taking this one on, and it’s around teaching basic concepts, influencing decision-makers, and possibly showcasing some customers. You'll get an idea of how to get signed up and started with the service, how you can take your app commercial, and a tour of the general architecture. Great for those just getting started.

  2. Creating Real-Time Social Applications with Flex and Flash Collaboration Service. The esteemed Kevin Hoyt is taking this one, and it's meant as an intermediate-level, code-centric look at full apps. We're going to focus on a few inspirational apps, and break down the thought processes in building them.

  3. Building Flex Collaboration Components. Mr Ryan Stewart, of Interwebs fame, is presenting this one. This will be focused on devs making their own AFCS components. Don't like our Chat Pod? Make your own! Good for folks already comfortable with the Flex Component life-cycle, into modularity, and who want to understand the component model involved in our real-time framework.

  4. Real-Time Collaboration Deep Dive: Using Adobe Flash Collaboration Service. I'm also doing this one - This is a Bring-Your-Own-Laptop for the most hardcore, people looking to do deep server integration with their AFCS apps. I’ll be covering external authentication with your user databases, Server-to-Server APIs, and the full range of integration options from both the client and server. This one's an hour and a half, and will really show the power of AFCS, as you'll come out of it with your own app working against the cloud.
Lots of exciting stuff! Sign up and register for these sessions, space is always limited.

LiveCycle@MAX Bundle

You may have heard that we are really increasing our focus on delivering LiveCycle ES focused content and activities at MAX this year. As part of this focus, we wanted to introduce a new promotion this year, to help package up the LiveCycle training and access to MAX sessions at a discounted price for you.

The LiveCycle@MAX bundle combines 1.5 days of introductory pre-conference training on LiveCycle ES (October 3 – 4), with a full conference pass to MAX 2009 (October 5 – 7). The preconference lab, "LiveCycle ES: Building Rich Engaging Applications," is an essential introduction to developing user-centric applications with LiveCycle ES. We strongly recommend this training to those new to LiveCycle ES, or those who would like a refresher, in order to get the most value out of the more advanced LiveCycle topics that will be presented during the MAX event.

Decipher HTML and Ajax @ MAX

WordPress, Drupal, Ajax, CSS -- These are all terms that HTML code junkies know well. But what about us mortals? Well, Adobe MAX is here to help -- and we have sessions and labs specifically aimed at giving you everything you need to design, build and understand how it all works. Here are some sessions that can really help:

"A Designer's Guide to Deciphering the Web" - Presented by Chris Converse, this beginner session will give you the confidence to start communicating better with your clients and your new web developer best friends about everything "web".

"Customizing WordPress Using Dreamweaver" and "Customizing Drupal Using Dreamweaver" - WordPress and Drupal are two of the most popular ways to create web sites that are fast to build, easy to maintain, and can be extended in tons of different ways. Customizing the design of them can be a bit tricky though. Well Luke Kilpatrick and Chris Charlton will walk you through how to install , customize, and maintain your sites using these engines -- all using your own laptop, so you can take it with you!

"Ajax for Designers" - Greg Rewis walks you through how to work with Ajax toolkits like Spry, jQuery, YUI and others and work with them inside Dreamweaver CS4. Greg will help keep the jargon away, and show you how to tame Ajax and be successful.

And for the adventurous...

"Getting Started with ColdFusion" -- Josh Adams and Kiran Sakhare will walk you through how to use your existing HTML and CSS skills and make your websites talk with live data. This beginner session will introduce what is considered one of the easiest programming languages to learn, and demonstrate how fast you can create cool web sites without breaking a sweat.

So if you live and breath HTML, Ajax, Dreamweaver and ColdFusion, or wish you did -- MAX 2009 is the place to be.

So join us and I'll see you there!

LiveCycle at MAX 2009

When MAX 2008 ended last year, I did the normal post-mortem conference interviews with a few customers, some partners, and a few developer buddies that I had met in previous outings, to get their feedback and make a plan for improvements in 2009. To my surprise, one common question kept coming up in the conversations – where the heck was LiveCycle? It seemed that there was a ton of interest for LiveCycle at MAX, and we didn’t deliver enough content or value for those attending to take serious notice. Wow – didn’t see that coming. MAX wasn’t the typical LiveCycle-geared conference, or at least that’s what I thought.

Well, this will not be the case for MAX 2009.

This year, you will have the opportunity to participate in dedicated LiveCycle ES sessions and labs, which I hope will exceed your expectations. We will have two dedicated rooms for our Develop sessions and labs, and you will hear all about the latest developments in LiveCycle ES from subject matter experts. You will also have the opportunity to attend a number of Envision sessions where you will hear from customers and partners as they highlight their experience and show case their solutions using the Adobe platform. All of these labs and sessions have been posted to the online Session Catalog, and you can find them by filtering by product, and selecting ‘LiveCycle ES’.

We will also have a number of activities for 1-on-1 discussions, to ensure we get to hear directly from our Enterprise customers and help set-up networking opportunities for you, via the Meet the LiveCycle Community event and a number of Birds of a Feather sessions. As more details are put together on the activities, I will post.

As another blogger posted – MAX, it ain’t just for Flash programmers anymore! – so, you LiveCycle folks are now in the know and can expect to be wow’d at MAX 2009.

Getting to Adobe MAX 2009 on a budget. Get a $400 discount!

Can you believe that Adobe MAX 2009 is only 10 weeks away!? Now would be a perfect time to start planning your trip. Since we are still stuck in these grim economic times, I thought it was a good idea to give you some tips on how and where to find the best prices for your MAX tickets, flights and hotels.

max.jpg

MAX TICKETS
If you get your MAX ticket before August 31st, you can benefit from the early bird pricing. A full conference ticket will cost you $1295 or €907. That's a $200 discount on the regular pricing! That includes lunch on all conference days, access to all keynotes and evening events and access to all breakout sessions and labs. Traveling alone is no fun so there's also a group discount. If you travel in a group of three or more, your registration price per pass is only $1095 or €767.

If you're in the US, you can get $400 off the regular price when you purchase one of the listed products from the Adobe Store. This offer is only valid in the US but for since we're all friends here, I think I can do something special. If you're not in the US, you can use promo code EMA931(restrictions apply*) to get a $400 discount on the regular pricing. Your MAX ticket will then cost $1095 or €767. Register here!

FLIGHTS
Finding an affordable flight is all about timing. If you book your flight well in advance, the flight will be cheaper. Generally if you also include a weekend stay, the price of your flight gets a lot cheaper. In case of MAX, I would suggest flying over on Friday October 2nd. Spending the extra days in the hotel is in most cases cheaper than the extra cost on the flight. Also check with your local travel agent. They may have a promotion for a certain airline. And also shop around! I've just checked some routes from Europe to Los Angeles and you can get a flight today for as little as €350. Which reminds me that I should probably book my flight as well ;-)

saharan.jpg

HOTEL
There are a ton of motels and hotels in the greater Los Angeles area and if you're not picky, you can even find a place to stay for as little as €14 a night. There really is a lot of choice in LA and I'm sure you can easily find a place to stay in your budget range. You can find a decent hotel starting at €50/$70 a night. For hotels near the venue, check out this Google Maps link. If you don't mind a little drive in the morning, you should also check hotels a little further away from the venue. But beware that LA traffic can be brutal in the morning and evenings.

CAR RENTAL
Renting a car is not a bad idea. Los Angeles is huge and public transportation can be a bit challenging. If you are going to rent a car, make sure you shop around! Compare the prices from different companies and also check with your local travel agent. They usually have even better prices than what you can get online.

Venice Beach

If you do rent a car, make sure you also do some sightseeing. Meet up with some of your friends and colleagues to share the milage and do a little road-trip. I can really recommend going to Santa Monica and/or Venice beach.

Melrose Avenue

If you want to do some shopping for some cool attire, head on down to Melrose Avenue (between Fairfax and La Brea). If you're done shopping, get yourself a cookies and cream milkshake at Johnny Rockets on the corner of Melrose and Gardner. Make sure you sit outside so you can watch the people walk by and maybe you'll even spot a celeb ;-)

Farmers Market

I can also recommend doing some shopping at Farmers Market. Whether you want to shop for some fresh fruit, hot sauce, get some goodies at an Apple store or get a new Taschen book, Farmers Market has it all.

If this is your first time in LA, you have to walk Hollywood Boulevard and get a photo of your favorite celeb's star on the walk of fame. But know that that will only keep you busy for about half an hour.

WHERE TO FIND THE BEST DEALS
I've recently discovered Momondo.com. This Danish startup finds the best travel deals for you and displays them in a nice uncluttered interface. Not sure if this is the cheapest flight available for that period? Then click on the price calendar to see if there are any cheaper flights. It will also find the best deals for hotels and car rentals. I've already mentioned it before in this post but also check with your local travel agent. You never know if they have a promotion for LA if you don't ask.

DISCLAIMER: Please note that Euro pricing is provided for information only. Exchange rates calculated with Google on July 28th 2009. Also read Google's disclaimer.

* Offer good for new Adobe MAX 2009 registrants only. Offer good for Adobe MAX 2009 full conference pass registration only. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer, package or registration code. Offer expires at 11:59pm PST on October 4, 2009. Offer is not transferable and valid only for intended recipient. Creative Suite Developers at MAX

I've heard from a bunch of Creative Suite Developers that MAX isn't designed for them. The perception is that it's just a bunch of Flash junkies talking about Actionscript - except for the sessions on Cold Fusion.

What these folks are overlooking is that the Adobe/Macromedia merger is really starting to gel. Flash is a really interesting runtime - especially when you de-couple it from the standard web browser. AIR was the first instance of this happening, but as those of you who attended the Creative Suite Developer Summit already know, we're leveraging that runtime inside of the Creative Suite as well.

We're working towards a development environment that encourages write-once-run-in-any-application. We're lowering the barriers to plug-in creation by providing staged development tools that don't immediately assume ten years of ninja programming skills - but that provide that type of control should you want it.

We'll be introducing some new implementations of this development direction. Take a look at the Creative Suite Developer track for some examples. But don't attend just for the Creative Suite - look for some interesting new ways to use your skills to branch out into more than just one screen, and to provide your creative customers with multiple publishing paths.

MAX - it ain't just for Flash programmers anymore!

Design @ MAX

Hey everyone. I wanted to post some updates on some specific sessions we are building for MAX 2009 that should be exciting for designers of any kind. At MAX this year, we are doing a lot to introduce sessions that will help you be more efficient in your design workflows, and give you the tools and skills you need to work across media and also start working in digital publishing.

For example in the "Creating an eBook for Distribution on Sony Reader Digital Book, Amazon Kindle, and Apple iPhone" session we have a step-by-step walkthrough on eBook publishing, presented by Colin Fleming that is sure to be popular.

One of the more time intensive activities with generating new business for your design team is in creating materials for your client pitches. Adobe's Michael Ninness will present the "Creating Pitch Presentations and Proposals with InDesign CS4" session that will take your pitch materials further with new interactive capabilities in InDesign to create compelling SWF and PDF presentations.

Finally, for InDesign users that want to dive into the world of interactive content, Chris Converse's hands-on lab, "Flash CS4 Professional for InDesign Users" will show you how to work in the world of pixels and work efficiently between InDesign and Flash Professional. So bring you laptop and dive in!

These are just a few of some of the new sessions we are building for designers at MAX 2009. Be sure to check out all of the sessions at http://max.adobe.com/ and see you in LA for MAX 2009!

Rethinking MAX BOFs

"BOF" stands for "Birds of a Feather", and MAX BOF sessions are informal meetings on a variety of subjects. Unlike core MAX sessions, BOFs are usually not driven by Adobe and the MAX team. Rather, the community defines topics of interest, and MAX provides facilities and publicity to drive attendance. Most BOFs are focused around core products and technologies, but many are on other topics. Again, BOFs are driven by the community.

We've hosted BOFs for a long time, ever since Allaire DevCon days. But over the years BOFs have evolved ...
  • Year ago we added "Meet the Team" sessions, free-form open discussions like BOFs, but giving MAX attendees a chance to face product teams and ask, comment, criticize, suggest, and more. The "Meet the Team" sessions have become so popular and well attended that BOF attendance has suffered as a result.
  • Then, as the number of products represented at MAX grew, so did the number of "Meet the Team" sessions. This resulted in fewer available rooms for BOFs, and thus fewer BOFs, despite growing attendance and greater attendee diversity.
  • And on top of all that, the BOF schedules have had to change. We used to have BOFs on two nights and at two time slots each night. But in recent years we had to scale back to one night to accommodate the expanded MAX schedule. And last year the one night of BOFs started later, again because of MAX scheduling, which caused the second time slot to run way past 10:00pm, and that hurt BOF participation even more.
Still, BOFs are an important part of the MAX experience, and so we've been brainstorming BOF alternatives to better serve our attendees. And as such, this year we're going to try something quite different.

Lunch time is a full hour in the middle of the day, well, in the middle of all three days, actually. There are no sessions scheduled during lunch time, and just about every MAX attendee is in the lunch room. So what if we moved BOFs to lunch time? We'd have the big open seating area we usually have, but would also have part of the room sectioned off, round lunch tables in each, and signage designating what group is eating lunch together where. Attendees could get their lunch, head to a specific area, and then meet and chat while eating. The atmosphere would be easy and relaxed, attendees would get fed, and we could accommodate lots more BOFs over the three days of MAX. We'd leave the "Meet the Team" sessions as they are, in the evening, but move all BOFs to lunch time.

We've not hammered out all of the details yet, this is a work in progress. Still, we're interested in your thoughts on the dilemma and the proposed solution.

MAX 2009 Announced

SAN JOSE, Calif.- Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced MAX 2009 registration is open. Registrants can now sign up for MAX 2009 sessions and labs. Adobe MAX is where the world’s most influential designers, developers and business decision makers gather to shape the future of engaging experiences and gain a competitive edge through intensive design/develop skills sessions and unique networking opportunities. This year, MAX will run from Oct. 4-7 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles.

“We are in a time of significant disruption and businesses are grappling with how technology will play in their strategies to survive and thrive”

Under the “Connect. Discover. Inspire.” theme, MAX 2009 will explore three emerging technology trends that are changing the landscape of communications: social computing, cloud computing and the expansion of rich content and video across mobile phones and other devices. MAX 2009 will feature keynotes from Adobe chief executive officer Shantanu Narayen, Adobe chief technology officer Kevin Lynch and other industry luminaries, as well as technology sneak-peeks, technical sessions, hands-on labs and exhibits.

MAX Update: Speaker Selection, Unconferences, BOFs, Registration

We are well underway with MAX planning now and I wanted to give an update on our progress.

Speaker Selection

We had over 800 proposed sessions and labs and we selected 100 for presentation at Adobe MAX 2009. It was a very tough year for sessions selection given the high quality of the proposals. It is my hope that many of the sessions will be presented at the MAX Unconferences being organized now.

Unconferences

We have 5 unconferences this year and have been working with the event leaders on shaping these sessions. The unconference sessions will be presented in an enclosed area of the exposition hall where each venue will be easily accessible to the expo but private. The unconference leadership includes 360Flex, FiTC, Ray Camden (ColdFusion), SoDA - Society of Design Agencies. Special thanks for all the support in building out these great sessions from the community.

Birds of a Feather & Meet the Teams

We will be organizing the BOF/MTT sessions soon. We will have a call for BOF sessions in the next week in partnership with this years organizer Greg Wilson. Greg is a evangelist at Adobe and is working closely with the product teams to make BOF/MTT evening the best yet. More to follow.

Registration

MAX Registration launched last week and we have over 100 registration booked to date in the first week. The early pricing puts MAX at $1295 but with community user group discounts you can get the price down to $1099 for a limited time.

Cheers,

Ted :)

MAX 2009 Site Visit

On Tuesday 32 members of the MAX team visited Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) and LA Live in preparation for MAX. The site visit is the first time we get the entire team together and we go through every detail of how to organize the physical event into the space. LA Live and LACC are at the center of a revitalization project in downtown Los Angeles. Over the past 3 years nearly all the surrounding buildings have been renovated and many new lots apartments have sprung up. The center sits in 4 parts, LACC (big convention center), Staples Arena (Where the LA Lakers play), Nokia Theater (concert hall), and LA Live (restaurants and entertainment venues). One thing that stood out this year is Nokia theater. It is easily the largest space we have ever done keynotes/awards/sneaks in and it should be a great venue.

We really have a great team working on MAX this year and combined with a great venue, MAX 2009 will be the best one yet.

See you at MAX 2009!

Cheers,

Ted :)

MAX 2009 in Los Angeles and Online (no MAX Europe in 2009)

Despite the challenges presented by the economy this year, Adobe is excited to be moving forward with our largest designer/developer event Adobe MAX 2009. MAX will take place October 4-7, 2009 in Los Angeles and online. We will not hold a unique Europe event in 2009, however, we are actively exploring options to make the Los Angeles event more accessible for our worldwide community.

MAX Europe has been a real success for Adobe and it is our intention to return to Europe in the future. Personally having been a part of every MAX Europe event, I know how important the event is to our global community. In order to make MAX a more global event, I want to encourage everyone, regardless of location, to participate in the "MAX Call for Sessions and Labs".

We are actively working to bring Adobe MAX to a far larger audience online in 2009. In 2008, we recorded MAX sessions and published them on AdobeTV for everyone to view. To date, MAX session content has been viewed by over 250,000 users, 50 times larger than physical MAX attendance in 2008. This year will be taking the online experience to the next level.

See you at MAX 2009!

Duane's World: Road to MAX 2008 Europe with James Ward

Adobe platform evangelists Duane Nikull and James Ward share a scotch and discuss the "good reasons" for attending MAX 2008 in Milan: meet the engineers, air your grievances with the evangelists, and be inspired by other developers doing amazing things with Adobe technology.

MAX 2008 NA Session Recording

Last week at MAX in San Francisco, the MAX team coordinated digital recording of over 290 hours of session content, about 4TB of video! We will be releasing this content FOR FREE, WITHOUT GEO-RESTRICTION ON ADOBETV starting around the first week or two of December. We plan to release 20 new sessions per week well into 2009. Additionally we will be posting all videos as soon as possible to the MAX NA Group on Adobe Groups for the exclusive benefit of paid attendees. All attendees will be invited to the MAX NA Group throughout this week.

The teams are working around the clock to get the video content posted online. The goal is to benefit the ecosystem with the latest educational material as soon as possible. As only 5000 attendees were able to enjoy MAX NA onsite, we plan to reach 2 Million by providing the session content for free online. To reach as many designers/developers as possible we chose Flash for an end to end video solution. Onsite at MAX NA we captured using Flash Media Live Encoder and Flash Media Server and published content to our video partners Digitally Speaking, Brightcove, and Akamai.

Thanks for being patient.

Regards,

Stacy

NEW Session added - Using C++ Libraries in Flash Player and Adobe AIR

Scott Peterson will be presenting a 2nd session of "Using C++ Libraries in Flash Player and Adobe AIR" on both:

Monday, November 17, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm, Moscone West 2024
Wednesday, November 19, 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm, Moscone West 2024

Learn how to build Flash applications using new components compiled from open source C++ libraries. Adobe has developed a compiler that takes C++ code and converts it to ActionScript bytecode usable in Flash CS4 Professional and Flex applications whether running in Adobe AIR or Flash Player. This session will go behind the scenes on how the compiler works and talk about the project to make these first libraries.

The C++ to ActionScript 3 technology known as project "Alchemy" will also be making an appearance in the Day 2 MAX keynote. It is mind blowing technology and adds a ton of value to the Flash Platform.

Cheers,

Ted :)

Experience Design at MAX

This year’s MAX is less than a week away!

It promises to be a great conference - particularly cool, we think, because in addition to all the amazing sessions and people attending this year, there will be sessions where you can hear and meet the members of Adobe's Experience Design (XD) team, who design apps many of you use on a daily basis. How to Get Your Hands on Thermo

As Doug mentioned, we're going to be doing another round of the Introduction to Thermo and the Next Generation of Flex session at MAX. The first one kept selling out even after moving it to a bigger and bigger room so we decided to do another one in the 5:00 - 6:00 slot. So what's the big deal?

At MAX we're going to be doing an early preview release of Thermo. We'll be doing an Adobe Labs release soon, but for the time being going to MAX is the only way to get your hands on Thermo. If you want to get the bits before anyone else, you'll have to attend one of those two Intro to Thermo sessions. We have DVDs we're going to be giving out during those sessions after walking you through the preview build. Otherwise if you're going to MAX you'll have to get the DVDs on the second day.

Note: The preview version for MAX is going to be Mac only. Windows users, don't despair, we'll have something for you soon. If you want it sooner, feel free to drop me an email at ryan@adobe.com.

We're also going to be announcing the new name for Thermo at MAX, so stay tuned!

Additional Thermo Labs Opened

Due to the overwhelming demand for the "Hands-on with Thermo: Creating Interactive Designs" labs, we quickly ran out of room. Well I'm pleased to say that we have doubled the number of sessions and they are available for reservation in the MAX scheduler. If you were bummed out that we were out of space, now is your chance to snag a seat. It should be an awesome session!

Internal Alpha build of AIR scores 100/100 on ACID3 Tests

I have been playing with an internal build of AIR targeting a release later this year. The new release has some great features under the hood for HTML/JS developers. Given the Webkit browser engine was used in AIR, we are refreshing it in the next AIR release. The updated engine even in early internal alpha passed the ACID 3 HTML/CSS tests with a 100/100 score.

Does your browser, ahem, application container pass?

See you at MAX!

Birds of a Feather - Call for Sessions!

In addition to the great list of general sessions and labs being offered at MAX this year, we’re also putting together several “Birds of a Feather” sessions. These sessions are much less formal than the regular MAX sessions and are more of a “led discussion” than a staged presentation, so they become much more interactive and fun.

We need YOU to suggest this year’s session topics and speakers. Go submit your suggestion(s)!

Submissions will be accepted until September 30th.

Want to be in the MAX keynote? "30onMAX"

Would you like to be in the MAX Keynote? We are putting together a video project called "30onMAX" and we will be highlighting selected videos in the Adobe MAX keynote in North America, Europe, and Japan.

Here is how it works:

1. Make video on: WHY MAX?

2. Upload to youtube.com

3. Tag it with "30onMAX"! (This is how we find it)

The 30onmax team will aggregate the videos for use in the MAX Keynotes and throughout the conferences. To assist us with "30onmax" we have recruited world famous director/actor Phillip Kerman to assist with the project.

Here is one of Phillip's earlier creations on Adobe MAX:

Now go grab your camera, costumes, and make a video on "Why MAX?"

Cheers,

Ted :)

MAX Award Nomination - FantasticContraption.com

At MAX 2008 we are supporting nominations this year and I have decided to nominate FantasticContraption.com for a MAX 2008 Award. It is easily one of the best games online. If you know of a game/site/application that is worthy, nominate it here.

To win each level you build contraptions to deliver the red ball into the red box. It sounds easy but the levels get harder as you go. Below is a screencast where I build a small cart to cross this "Gap" to win the level.

WARNING: You can waste your entire day on this site. I know several people who have played this game non-stop for 3-4 days straight trying to solve the basic levels. It is that fun.

See you at MAX!

Ted :)

Adobe MAX and Enterprise Developers

Hello! This is Greg Wilson - one of the technical evangelist at Adobe focused on Enterprise applications and development.

MAX is gearing up to be a great event this year with hundreds of great sessions on everything Adobe. As you would expect, there are a lot of sessions on media design, creative products, video, etc., but did you know that there are many sessions specifically for enterprise business application developers? Adobe has many products, including LiveCycle ES, LiveCycle Data Services, AIR, and Flex, that are very relevant to the enterprise and becoming more relevant every day.

I thought I would take a few minutes and highlight some of the sessions specifically targeted for Enterprise developers:

Steven Webster (technical director of Adobe Consulting), and his team have put together some great sessions that will be presented by members of Adobe consulting from North America and Europe:

The Technical Marketing team has put together some great introductory sessions:

Several members of the Platform Evangelist Team are also presenting some enterprise-focused sessions:

Other Enterprise-related sessions:

For a complete list of Adobe MAX sessions, please visit the MAX Session Locator.

I'll see you in San Francisco!

MegaLabs! Coming To A MAX Near You Soon!

Hi, Ben Forta here dropping by the official MAX blog ...

At MAX we host several types of sessions. These include:
  • The tried and true 60 minute lecture style sessions, a chance to hear and learn from experts, interact, ask some questions, and walk away hopefully inspired and somewhat wiser.
  • Then there are the 90 minute lab sessions, hands-on experiences that tend to cover less content than can be covered in the lectures, but offering the chance to learn by doing. Hands-on labs have limited space (there are a finite number of computers and seats available), and they always sell out quickly (we usually have a waiting list for last minute additions).
  • Informal "Birds-of-a-Feather" sessions (or BOFs for short) are after-hours hour-long informal get-together's on predetermined subjects, usually driven by the attendees as opposed to being driven by MAX organizers.
And this year we're going to try something new and exciting (and perhaps a little crazy, too). Imagine a hands-on lab room many times the size of the usual labs. Now picture lots and lots of MAX attendees, 200 or more, each armed with their own laptops that we've configured ahead of time, and all following along with an instructor through fast-paced examples. And when the session is complete, attendees will have fully configured and functional environments on their own machines for future use.

Sounds fun, I know. And they are new this year, debuting at MAX in San Francisco - MegaLabs!

I'll be presenting one, a getting-started crash-course session on LiveCycle Data Services and BlazeDS entitled Getting Started with LiveCycle Data Services on Monday, November 17, 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm. And there are at least two more MegaLabs planned, one on AIR and one on AfterEffects.

We'll post more details on MegaLabs nearer the time. But for now, registration is open, and I hope you can join us for the fun!

Learn about creating large Flex applications at MAX

Anyone who has spent any time doing Flex development has seen the name Alex Harui, especially if you read Flexcoders. Alex is going to be speaking extensively about what it takes to architect a large Flex application in his session: Flex Framework Features to Support Large Applications.

Alex has provided a more detailed description if you needed more convincing that this is a great session to attend:
As your application grows in size and complexity, several issues will probably have to be addressed such as download size, development processes, maintenance and upgrades to new versions. This presentation covers the concepts in Flex and Flash Player that offer ways to minimize SWF download size, refactor your application into multiple pieces so that more than one person can work in different areas simultaneously or so that the entire application does not need recompilation for every change, and how to plan ahead if your application is so complex that it is not feasible to guarantee that all pieces are compiled in the same version. Technical topics discussed will be: ApplicationDomains, SecurityDomains, Modules, SWFLoader, Marshall Plan, trusted and untrusted applications, and AMF.

Make sure to register now and we'll see you at MAX!

Flex 4 at Adobe MAX

The Flex development team has been very busy lately and last night they posted a ton of code and documentation on the next version of the Flex framework codenamed "Gumbo". "Gumbo" is the framework that will enable much richer application UI and break free of the more rigid look and feel of todays Flex applications. It is also the framework that will be powering applications made with "Thermo".

Both "Thermo" and "Gumbo" will be in full force at Adobe MAX. If you want to see the next generation of RIA frameworks I would do this:

1. Take a look at the Flex Open Source Site!
2. Plan on attending Adobe MAX North America, Europe, and Japan!

See you at MAX!

Cheers,

Ted :)
